How to Install an Automatic Thermostat Instead of a Manual

An automatic thermostat runs off a program. This program automatically adjusts your thermostat's setting up and down depending on how you programmed it. These are far superior to manual thermostats you have to turn up and down every time you want to change the setting. Best of all, installing an automatic thermostat is no more complicated than installing a manual one. You need the same tools and materials, and usually it takes the same amount of time. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the power to the HVAC unit by turning off the correct circuit breaker in the circuit breaker panel.

    • 2

Open up the HVAC unit access panel and look for the control board. On the control board is the terminal strip that connects to the thermostat wires. Note which colored wire goes to what lettered terminal. Close the access panel back up and go to the thermostat location.

    • 3

Install the wall plate on the wall by pulling the thermostat wires through the back of the wall plate and then mounting the wall plate on the wall with drywall anchors and screws.

    • 4

Check the thermostat wires to see if they are properly stripped. One-fourth inch of bare copper should be exposed at the end. If not, strip them with your wire strippers.

    • 5

Connect the thermostat wires to the thermostat. Check the notes you made in step 2 to correctly identify the wires.

    • 6

Push the thermostat on to the wall plate with gentle pressure until it snaps into place.

    • 7

Turn the power back on to the HVAC unit and read the automatic thermostat's installation manual. Program the thermostat to your desired comfort level.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure the power is off to the HVAC unit when installing the automatic thermostat. Failure to turn the power off can damage the control board.
