How to Run a Basketball Offense: Center Tap

The first play of the game. Excited? Ready? Here comes the toss.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Basketballs
  • Basketballs
  1. Step 1

    Place your tallest player (duh) in center court. This is usually your, um, center.

  2. Step 2

    Position other players around the circle at each compass point.

  3. Step 3

    Put the guards up and down court.

  4. Step 4

    Place the forwards on the half-court line.

  5. Step 5

    When the official tosses - jump.

  6. Step 6

    As soon as the ball is tossed, break the forwards downcourt toward their basket.

  7. Step 7

    Tap the ball toward your basket and straight to your guard.

  8. Step 8

    Leave the second guard on defense at center court.

  9. Step 9

    Pass from the guard to either forward.

  10. Step 10

    If you've succeeded in winning the tap and beating out the defense, well then, shoot.

  11. Step 11

    If the defense is quick, slow your forwards and set up an offensive play.

Tips & Warnings
  • Jump high.
  • If you know your center can't out-jump the opposing player, don't try. Instead, shift one of the forwards toward the defensive basket while the other players move to cover the defensive tap receivers.
