How to Get the Highest Paid Jobs
It's hard to walk past a gorgeous house with a couple of Mercedes parked out front without wondering, "How did they do that?" Especially when you hate your own job and can barely make ends meet. But getting to the top isn't a mystery. It simply takes dedication, ambition and a willingness to stick to the professional path you've chosen.

Choose the field you want to work in. This may seem like a no-brainer, but remember: If you're going to excel in your profession, you should enjoy it. Top-paying professions include being a physician, surgeon or psychiatrist, or a high-level executive in business, finance or education. General physicians earned an average of $186,044 a year in 2008, and those who specialized in a specific area of medicine earned $339,738 a year, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Psychiatrists earned $167,610 a year on average, and top executives earned $158,560 a year.

Complete your education. Few jobs allow people to get to the top without a formal education. Depending on the profession you choose, the educational requirements might be extensive, according to BLS. For example, a surgeon must spend four years in college, followed by four years of medical school, then several years in residency before he can earn his license to practice on his own.

Do your time. Many of the highest-paying jobs require significant experience. For instance, a top executive in the education industry, such as a school superintendent, must hold a master's degree in his field of teaching and have worked for many years to qualify, according to BLS. Additionally, those who own their own businesses, such as family practice physicians or marriage counselors, must become firmly established in their areas and have a good clientele to begin earning great money.

Earn an outstanding reputation. Whether you work for a corporation or branch out on your own, your reputation will have an impact on how well you do financially. Psychiatrists who are known for being excellent listeners and who offer great advice will generate more clients than those who aren't, and executives who have sharp business sense paired with great communication skills will go further than those who don't.

Tips & Warnings
These are just a few examples of careers that pay well. Other careers, such as being a pilot or military officer, also offer high-paying opportunities.
Not every high-paying job has to be gained with an education. In fact, some of the highest-paying on the planet are in the entertainment industry, where all you really need is huge talent and extraordinary luck. After all, director Quentin Tarantino is a high school dropout.
Top-paying positions aren't just lying around, waiting for someone to scoop them up. The pay and prestige that come with these jobs attract a lot of candidates, BLS says. You'll always have plenty of competition, so you need to stay at the top of your game.
