1. Install antivirus software on your machine. Keep it up-to-date so it catches the newest viruses that come out. Most antivirus programs allow you to set a schedule for updating and scanning; use that feature so you don't have to do it manually.

2. Keep your Windows operating system updated by using automatic updates. Microsoft creates security patches and sends them out as needed. Set Windows through the automatic updates section to download and install these patches, eliminating many security problems.

3. Use a firewall program on your computer. A firewall is a software program that acts as a gatekeeper on what goes in and out to your machine. Windows does have a built-in firewall.

4. Get a backup system and use it in case you get a virus on your computer. It can be a USB flash drive or an online backup solution. Set it to automatically back up your information.
