How to Download YouTube Videos As WMV

Watching YouTube videos can be fun and informative. Sometimes you might come across a favorite video that you would like to be able to watch at any time, regardless of Internet connection. YouTube does not have an easy download feature, so this technique will require the use of an additional website. Fortunately, there are tools available that allow download of a YouTube video to a WMV file for play in Windows Media Player.

Instructions

    • 1

Copy the URL for the specific YouTube video you want to download. When you have the video opened in regular view mode (not full screen), you will see a summary of the video to the right of the viewer screen. Directly below the summary is a URL, and beneath that is an embed code. Highlight the URL and copy it by pressing "Ctrl" and "C."

    • 2

Paste the URL into a web video conversion site. One example of such a site is Zamzar.com, which allows conversion of files or web-based videos to multiple file formats. Find the appropriate field to enter the URL and paste the copied URL from YouTube by pressing "Ctrl" and "V."

    • 3

Choose WMV as the output file type. There should be a pull-down menu with an option such as "Convert To" where you can select WMV.

    • 4

Enter an appropriate email address. This is where the website will send the conversion link. Choose an email service that will not bounce back emails from unknown addresses, or add the website's email to your address book.

    • 5

Press the "Convert" button. This will begin the process of uploading the video to the server. This may take several minutes, depending on the size of the file. You can monitor the progress using the progress bar. Do not exit the browser until the file has completed the upload, as this might result in an incomplete conversion.

    • 6

Check the email for a download link. Most of these conversion sites send a link that will redirect you to a page from which to download the file, rather than clogging the email inbox with a large video file.

    • 7

Follow the link to the download and click the appropriate download link. This should pull up a prompt screen giving you an option to choose the "Save To" directory. Choose the location where you want to save the file. Once you click "OK," the download should commence, and you will soon have a WMV version of the desired YouTube video.

Tips & Warnings

  • Most YouTube videos are less than 10 minutes long, but if you are working with a longer one, it may require that you sign up for a paid premium account.
