How to Loop Record in ProTools 8 LE

Pro Tools Version 8 LE is a computer software program that has become a worldwide standard application for digital audio recording, mixing and editing. Available for both the Apple and PC computer platforms, audio engineers, musicians, composers, TV and radio production departments and record producers use this program for their productions. Amateurs and professionals alike can quickly and easily produce music and release their creativity once they learn to use Pro Tools. One of the features most appreciated by musicians is loop recording, where the section of a song can be played over and over. A musician can record as many "takes" as he wants and then the best parts of all those takes can be easily pieced together to make a flawless performance.

    • 4

Using the Selector Tool, click and drag across the area in the track you want to loop record over.

    • 5

Enter a "Preroll" time if desired in the Transport Bar. If this option is not showing, click on the small down arrow near the top-right side of the Transport Bar and check "All" from the drop-down menu.

    • 6

    • 8

View all the takes by right-clicking on the looped area. Click "Matches" and then "Matching Criteria" and be sure the Track Name box is checked.

    • 9

Right-click the looped area again and select "Matches," then click on "Expand alternates to new playlists" from the menu. All of the takes for that recording will be displayed beneath the main track.

Tips & Warnings

  • "Comp" (compile a final track) from the takes by highlighting a section in one of the takes that you want using the Selection Tool and then right-clicking on it and choosing "Copy selection to main playlist." This will replace that area in the main track with the selected area. Optionally, you can choose "Copy selection to new playlist" to leave the original track in place while building a new playlist.
