In computing terms, a parent directory is a directory that is above another directory. The root directory is the only directory that cannot be put below any other directory. The directory below the parent directory is the subdirectory. The directory path looks like this: root directory/parent directory/subdirectory. Web sites are set up in this directory system so you can easily edit the information in your address bar to go to a new part of the Web site, even if there is no link to it.

Step 1
Go on the Internet with your browser.
Step 2
Type the name of the Web site whose parent directory you want to find in your browser's address bar and press "Enter."
Step 3
Delete the last part of the URL in the address bar to get to the parent directory of that page. If the page's URL looks like this: http://www.website/webpage/images.html, you would delete the "images.html" but leave the "/" intact. "Webpage" in this case would be the parent directory.
Tips & Warnings
- Each directory in a URL is separated by a "/."
- Remember to only delete one type of directory at a time so you don't miss the parent directory.
