How to Install Clawfoot Bathtub Feet
Updating a bathroom with a new tub is a big job, especially if your new tub is made from cast iron. Cast iron is very heavy, and most cast iron tubs require the installation of feet to support the tub. The task can seem daunting, but it can be done. You'll need to learn how to properly install the feet of your claw foot tub to avoid improper placement and to avoid creating a possibly dangerous and unstable tub. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- New cast iron tub and footing
- Hacksaw
- Foam insulation board
- 11/16-inch box wrench
Instructions

1
Cut two sections of foam insulation board to fit under the tub. Each foam board should be 6 inches thick and placed on top of each other, giving your tub a 12-inch lift to allow you to work.
-
2
Place the tub onto the foam board so it rests securely about 12 inches off the ground.
-
-
3
Open the package containing the footing for your tub (if you have a claw foot) and match each lug with the corresponding foot. They are labeled by the manufacturer for easy matching.
-
4
Slide each foot bolt onto the provided lugs.
-
5
Place the feet onto the bolts, then tighten each lug so the foot sits flush against the wall of the tub with no wiggle room.
-
6
Lift the tub off of the foam, remove the foam from the area, and set the tub into place.
-
7
Use an 11/16-inch box wrench to tighten all of the lugs completely.
-
8
Check for balance in the tub. If it moves when you pull or push on it, you'll need to stabilize it.
-
9
Stabilize the tub by lifting it and placing it back onto the foam insulation boards.
-
10
Remove the feet from the tub, and place the spacer washers (enclosed in the footing assembly packaging) between the foot and the foot bolt.
-
11
Replace the feet, remove the foam boards and tighten the bolts down again as you did before. The tub should be completely stable now.
