How to Run a Basketball Offense: The Wheel Pattern

With its constant circular motion, this is a good pattern against a zone defense.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Basketballs
  • Basketballs
  1. Step 1

    Set the offense in a rough circle around the key: point guard at top, a forward in each low post zone, and the remaining players in the wings.

  2. Step 2

    Pass from the point guard to the right wing.

  3. Step 3

    Shoot or drive from the wing player.

  4. Step 4

    Pass from the wing to the right low post if the lane is blocked or the shot guarded.

  5. Step 5

    Move the wing player into the key.

  6. Step 6

    Give and go from the low post to the driving wing.

  7. Step 7

    Shoot! Shoot!

  8. Step 8

    Shift the point guard to a wing position as the wing moves inside.

  9. Step 9

    Rotate the left wing to point.

  10. Step 10

    Note that if the driving wing is unable to get the pass from the low post, the wing should stop in the key instead and set a screen for the forward in the left low post.

  11. Step 11

    Drive the left forward around the screen.

  12. Step 12

    Have the right forward pass to the left forward.

  13. Step 13

    Slam it home.

  14. Step 14

    Pass back to the point if the shot fails or isn't open.

  15. Step 15

    Start the wheel over.

Tips & Warnings
  • If the defense is clever in thwarting this play, switch to another once the first wheel is complete and the ball is back in the point guard's hands.
