How to Use a Peavey Vypyr Amp

Some of the most well-known musical equipment and devices produced by Peavey Electronics are amplifiers, which include the 5150/6505 and the JSX line. Recently, Peavey introduced the Vypyr line of amplifiers, which feature 32-bit, floating-point processors that model some of the most natural sounds available in electronics.

Things You'll Need:

  • Electric Guitar
  • Guitar Cable

Plug in your amp and turn on the power switch; the amp will run through a short boot process.

Connect your guitar to the amp's input jack and select a comfortable volume level by turning the “Master Volume” knob.

Turn the knob marked “Stompboxes” to choose the stompbox-style effect that you would like to use. Stompbox effects include modulation enhancements (such as Wah or chorus) and distortions that would typically be placed between your guitar and the amplifier in a live-sound setting. Press the knob and release it to engage the stompbox effect editing mode to change the parameters of the selected effect.

Turn the knob marked “Amp” to select the model of amplifier that you would like to use. Press and release the knob to switch between clean mode (indicated by a green LED) and overdrive/distortion mode (indicated by a red LED). Press and hold the knob to engage tuning mode.

Turn the knob marked “Effects” to select the post-amp effect that you would like to use. Press the knob and release it to engage the effect editing mode to change the parameters of the selected effect.

Turn the knob marked “Pre Gain” to select the level of distortion produced by the amp. Use the knob to change the first parameter of the effect you are editing.

Select the EQ (Equalization) levels that you prefer for “Low,” “Mid” and “High” by turning those marked knobs. Use the “Low” knob to change the second parameter of the effect you are editing. Use the “Mid” and “High” knobs to change the number of repeats and volume of the delay you are using in edit mode. Tap the “Tap Tempo” button below the “Effects” knob to set the tempo of your delay.

Turn the knob marked “Post Gain” to set the volume of your individual presets. Use the knob to change the level of reverberation that you are using in edit mode.

Turn the knob marked “Master Volume” to select the overall volume level of your amplifier.

Save your presets by selecting the bank (A, B or C) with the “Bank” button in the presets group, and then the preset location button (1, 2, 3 or 4). Press and hold the preset location button for a few moments to save your new preset.

Tip

To take full advantage of the Vypyr's potential, you will need a computer with Internet access and a USB cable.

One technique that helps in choosing a sound on an amplifier is to set all of the EQ knobs to their middle setting (usually 5). When you are fine-tuning your amp, this makes it easier to determine the EQ levels you want.

This amplifier includes a line-in that allows you to connect a CD or MP3 player to allow play-along practice, as well as an output jack for headphones or a recording device.

The 75-Watt and 100-Watt models of the Peavey Vypyr include a “Power Sponge” knob, which allows the power level of the amp to be attenuated to a lower power output. This feature allows the amp to sound like it is turned up to higher levels at lower volumes.

Warnings:

  • Prolonged exposure to loud sounds can permanently damage your hearing. Always practice at a comfortable and safe volume level. Follow all of the amplifier's instructions and warnings to avoid the risk of fire or electric shock.
