Save

If the engine in your Honda Accord has locked up or burned out, you are going to have to remove the engine to rebuild or replace it. If you take your Honda to a dealership or a professional rebuilding shop, this process may cost you a lot of time and money. With the right tools and knowledge, you can complete this job in your garage in less than a day's time and for a lot less money.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench
  • Bucket
  • Jack
  • Jack stands
  • Ratchet set
  • Engine hoist
  • Remove the bolts with the wrench that are securing the hood to the levers. Pull the hood off of the Honda Accord and set in a safe, clean spot. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.

  • Drain the radiator into a bucket. Remove the radiator hose from the radiator by removing the securing clamp with a screw driver or cutting the hose off with a knife. Remove the screws that are holding the fan in place and remove the fan. Pull the air intake out of the engine house.

  • Place the bucket under the power steering pump and use a wrench to loosen the nut and remove the power steering hoses. Remove the bolts that are holding the power steering pump in place on the firewall with the wrench and remove the power steering pump. Remove the air conditioning compressor bolts with the wrench and remove it.

  • Raise the front end of the Honda Accord with the jack and rest the front end on jack stands. Remove the bolts that are connecting the transmission to the engine using the ratchet set. Place the jack under the engine and raise it slightly to take the weight off of the motor mounts. With the ratchet set and the wrench, remove the motor mount bolts and pull the motor mounts from the fittings.

  • Position the engine hoist in front of the Honda Accord. Connect the hoist chain to the engine using the motor mount fixtures. Hoist the engine out of the engine housing.

  • Repeat all of the above steps in reverse to place the new engine into the Honda Accord.
