How to Know What College Courses to Take Exams For
Exams are constantly given in college to assess your ability to comprehend the curriculum and gauge how well you retain the material taught in the classes. College courses may have different exam requirements--such as lab tests, workshop tests, essay tests and objective tests--that you need to be prepared for. Planning well is important to determine what classes you need to take exams for, as well as what classes you need to take during your college years.

1
Create a matriculation plan. A matriculation plan is a list of classes you need to take at specific times in your college career. It should list each quarter or semester of school you will be enrolled, for the entire four years. Depending on the school, there should be either 8 semesters or 12 to 16 quarters. Consult your major requirements sheet to determine the required classes for your major.

2
Check your college catalog for class requirements. After you have created the matriculation plan, list the classes you still need to take and locate them in the college catalog. The college catalog lists the requirements for each class.

List the classes that you need to take placement exams for. Placement exams are exams you take before being allowed to enroll in a class. These include series classes, upper-division classes and language classes. You will need to test out of these classes in order to enroll in the succeeding classes in the series.

4
List the classes you need to take final exams for. These classes include the majority of your classes, with the exception of certain classes that may not require an exam. Inquire about the policies for each of these classes--whether you take the final exam at the end of the semester or at the end of the school year.

5
Sign up for the exams you can take right away. It is important to accomplish tasks like finishing exams as soon as possible so that you can graduate on time. Sometimes exams are offered only at specific times in the year, so you need to carefully plan your college years.
