How to Get the Weatherizing Home Grant
The Weatherization Home Grant Program is administered by state governments on behalf of the United States Department of Energy. The grant program is designed to assist some of to 20 to 30 million eligible low-income Americans in making their houses more energy efficient. The program provides services such as broken glass and door replacement, sealing holes, caulking windows and doors, weather-stripping and insulation. The average value of these services is $2,500. Visit the Web site of the state agency charged with administering the weatherization program for your state. The Department of Energy provides a list of links to these agencies on their Web site. The state agency Web site should provide you with information about the closest program administrator's office where you can apply for participation in the program.

Determine your eligibility. A quick call to your local program administrator should allow you to make this determination. If you receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Aid to Families with Dependant Children payments then you are automatically eligible for a weatherization home grant.
Enhanced eligibility requirements are established by the states. These requirements include factors such as the age of the applicant, disability status of the applicant's family members, number of dependents, income below a certain percentage of poverty level and income level comparison to median income in your state. For instance, The Central Oklahoma Community Action agency which administers the weatherization program for several Oklahoma counties states that a family of four may qualify for the program if their yearly income does not exceed $33,661 per year.

Visit your local weatherization program administrator's office and complete the application for participation in the program. According to the Department of Energy the weatherization application should take about 20 minutes to complete. You will be required to provide proof of income as part of the application process.

Sign-off on the inspection of the weatherization. After being approved for participation you will be placed on a waiting list pending a professional energy consultation and the arrival of the contractors. Once they have performed the weatherization of your house you will be asked to sign off on an inspection of their work.
