How to Make a Hand-Crank Film Advance

Film cameras have become relics, replaced by the ease and convenience of digital cameras. But even before the typical film cameras that many people used, there were hand-crank film cameras, which needed to be cranked in order to advance the film after each picture was taken. There were many models of these kinds of cameras, most of which feature a hand crank on the top-right side of the camera.

Instructions

    • 1

Take a picture as you would normally with your camera.

    • 2

Locate the hand crank. It will be on the back side of the camera, on the top right. It will appear as a horizontal plastic piece with many plastic teeth.

    • 3

Turn this piece to the right until it comes to a stop. You should hear a winding noise until you can no longer turn it.

    • 4

Continue taking pictures normally and repeating Step 3 after every picture until the crank will no longer turn. This means that all the film's exposures have been used.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some older hand-crank cameras have a crank on the top or side of the camera. On these cameras, you will have to wind the the film using these cranks after each picture you take.
