How to Create Hair Streak Colors for Kids

Colored hair streaks are cute and fun, especially when the people sporting the colorful locks are young kids. Colored hair streaks are perfect for playing dress up, getting ready for the home game and adding a dramatic element to almost any ensemble. Most brightly colored hair streaks for kids are temporary, meaning that they wash out with each shampoo. However, some hair color can be used to place permanent streaks of red, yellow, blue, green, purple and pink in hair.

Things You'll Need

• Colored hair gel (desired color)
• Comb
• Hair clips
• Hair dryer
• Color bowl
• Color brush
• Hair lightener (bleach)
• 20 volume strength color developer
• Gloves
• Timer
• Color addition (desired color)
• Shampoo
• Conditioner

Instructions

Temporary

1. Comb through clean, dry hair to remove tangles. Section the hair that you would like to color and pin the rest of the hair out of the way.

2. Open the colored gel and squeeze a 1 to 2 inch line of gel onto the teeth of the comb. Comb the gel onto the strand of hair, replenishing the colored gel as necessary. Apply a liberal amount of gel to the hair. Keep applying gel until the color is even throughout the strip of hair.

3. Dry the strip of hair with a hair dryer, set on medium heat, until the hair is dry throughout.

Permanent

1. Comb the hair thoroughly. Section the hair that you wish to color and pin the rest of the hair out of the way using the hair clips.

2. Mix equal parts of the hair lightener and developer in the color bowl. Put on the gloves.

3. Apply the mixture to the strand of hair that you wish to color using the color brush. Work the hair lightener into the hair with your fingers, applying more lightener as necessary. Continue applying the mixture until the hair is saturated throughout.

4. Remove the gloves. Set a timer for 20 minutes.

5. Remove the hair clips and shampoo the hair to remove the hair lightener. Dry the hair completely.

6. Put on the gloves and apply a liberal amount of color additions to the lightened portions of the hair. Set a timer for 15 minutes.

7. Rinse, shampoo, condition and style as desired.

Tips & Warnings

• Do not allow your children to come into contact with furniture, clothing or any other absorbent material until the colored hair gel is completely dry. The color will transfer if it comes into contact with other objects.

• Some hair lighteners require constant, even heat in order to process correctly. Make sure that the lightener you select processes at room temperature if you do not have a hooded dryer.
