How to Create Emoticons on the Keyboard

An emoticon--also known as a smiley or emote--is an expression used in online communication to convey your tone, mood or reaction. Since recipients of online communication can't see your facial expression or hear the tone of your voice, emoticons can be especially helpful for ensuring that the people with whom you communicate understand the spirit in which your comments are intended. Something you meant as a joke might easily be mistaken for a serious statement if not for a simple smiley face. Whether you want to use plain-text keyboard emoticons, or you're just tired of clicking on smiley faces in popular instant messenger programs, it's easy to create emoticons on the keyboard.

Instructions

    • 1

Use an equal sign or a colon for the eyes. If you're using a program like an instant messenger that converts smileys to graphics, you should choose the colon, because it's more commonly recognized than the equal sign.

    • 2

If you want your emoticon to have a nose, use the dash key (just to the right of the zero).

    • 3

Use the appropriate key for the emoticon's mouth. Use the close parentheses key for a smile, the open parentheses key for a frown, a "D" for a big grin, an "O" for a surprised face, or a "P" for a smiley with its tongue sticking out.

    • 4

Experiment with different key combinations. Try using different characters for the mouth or adding eyebrows using "greater than" or "less than" keys. You'll be surprised at the variety of expressions you can create on the keyboard.
