How to Kill Bees and Destroy Bee Hives
Feral bee colonies can often prove dangerous. From March until September, the colonies are quite bothersome. Colonies can be established inside walls, eves, attics, old logs and wall voids of old buildings. Beehives can often hold up to 80 pounds of honey, which can seriously damage the walls and structures. Honeybees can only sting once, but when a hive is present a person is in danger of being stung numerous times by the inhabitants. Often passing within 50 feet of a hive is enough to rile the bees and pose a danger. Bee hives can live year after year, building in colony size and strength. Does this Spark an idea?

- Long-sleeve light shirt
- Long-sleeve light pants
- Hat
- Beekeeper's hat with veil
- Beekeeper's gloves
- Sprayer
- Bee insecticide
- Plastic bag

Wear light, smooth clothing when trying to kill bees and hives. Wear long sleeves, long pants, gloves and a hat. Bees become agitated and more likely to attack when dark or bright clothing is worn. A beekeeper's hat, veil and gloves should be worn as well.

Kill bees and beehives in the late winter or early spring, before the bees become more active and the population grows. In cold weather, bees tend to stay close to the hive and maintain a smaller community.

Choose a good bee-killing insecticide from a local home-improvement store or pest-control supplier. Follow the directions on the label. Many insecticides require a sprayer to be used, and others are sold in a hand-held spray can.

Spray the insecticide in the early morning when the light is just starting in the sky, or late in the evening within 30 minutes of sunset. This is the ideal time to kill as many bees in the hive as possible before they head out to forage or after they come home for the night.

Wait a day and then repeat the insecticide application. It is advisable to spray the hive a minimum of three times over three consecutive days.

Remove the beehive once bees are all dead. Place the beehive in a large plastic bag and secure. Take the hive promptly to the landfill. If you burn yard debris, the hive can also be destroyed in a burn barrel.

Wash the area where the hive was with soap and water. If the hive was in a wall, attic or other household location be sure to plug any entrances into the location so more bees do not take up residence at a later date.

Tips & Warnings
Never wear perfume, scented soap, deodorants or sweet-smelling lotions when trying to kill bees and hives. Bees find these scents attractive.
Never attempt to kill bees or a beehive if you are allergic or suspect you may be allergic to bee venom. Many people suffer severe reactions to a bee sting and it is often fatal.
