How to Make Seaweed and Kelp Body Soap
Seaweed and kelp body soap is something that you can make at home with minimal risk. While homemade soap does take some practice to perfect, your first bars will probably be usable. This soap combines the dark color of seaweed and kelp with the moisturizing properties of rosemary essential oil and coconut oil. This recipe makes two pounds of soap, which is about 16 regular bars of soap. Store the unused soap bars in a cool, dark and dry place until you are ready to use them. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- 7 oz. coconut oil
- 7 oz. pure olive oil
- 7 oz. vegetable oil
- 1 oz. grated beeswax
- Large enamel saucepan
- 2 ¾ oz. lye
- Glass stirrer
- Goggles
- Thick rubber gloves
- 1 tsp. rosemary essential oil
- ½ tbsp. kelp
- 1 tbsp. dried seaweed
- Soap bar mold
- Thick blanket

Pour the coconut oil, pure olive oil, vegetable oil and beeswax into a large enamel saucepan. Heat the mixture over low heat until the oils are completely liquefied and melted.

Using a glass stirrer, add the lye to the enamel saucepan. Make sure to wear goggles and thick rubber gloves during this step.

Place a glass thermometer in the saucepan and continue heating until the contents reach 120 degrees F.

Remove the saucepan from heat. Continue stirring the mixture until a thin coating of soap is left on your stirrer when you remove it from the mixture. This is called tracing.

Add the rosemary essential oil, kelp and dried seaweed, and stir to combine.

Pour the liquid soap into the mold of your choice. Cover the mold with a thick blanket and let it harden for 48 to 72 hours. Once the soap has hardened, you can remove it from the mold and cut the soap into smaller bars if you wish.
