How to Make Dowels in the Wood Shop
Wooden dowels are useful tools for a wood craftsman, and can be used in various roles. Dowels can be purchased commercially, however many craftsmen like to make their own dowels when working on a project, for an added level of pride in their creation. In addition to allowing you to have crafted your parts yourself, making your own dowels gives you fill control over the exact specifications of your dowels.

1
Use a beading plane on one edge of the wood plank. This will create a rounded corner.
-
2
Flip the plank over and use the beading plane on the opposite face of the same edge. After his, you will have one edge of the plank rounded in a half circle.
-
-
3
Use the beading plane twice more on the wood to complete the forming of the dowel. You will be making one pass for each face of the plank, with the plane facing in the opposite direction on the face as the passes in Steps 1 and 2, ending up with a dowel-like shape on the end of the wood, connected by only a thin piece of wood.
-
4
Snap off the dowel.
-
5
Cut off the notch remaining from snapping the dowel off of the plank using the block plane.
-
6
Sand around the entire dowel until the dowel is smooth.
-
7
