How to Care for Snowshoe Leather Laces
Even if you don't live in Arctic climates, snowshoes can be a good investment. With proper care and maintenance, these shoes can last for years. They can't be left to general wear and tear, however. The leather lacing that binds these shoes together must receive proper maintenance.

1
Purchase an oil-based varnish from a home improvement or hardware store. Varnish is generally used for wood finishing, but the oil-based varnishes will help to keep the leather supple and strong.
-
2
Allow the lacing from the snowshoe to dry completely in warm, dry place. Do not allow the moisture on the laces to freeze by leaving them in a garage, patio or trunk of a car, or you can permanently damage the leather.

3
Lay a drop cloth over your work area to prevent varnish from staining carpet, table or flooring below.
-
4
Soak a rag or cloth in the varnish. Rub vigorously onto the leather laces. Allow the excess to drop off onto the drop cloth.
-
5
Allow the varnish to soak in for at least an hour; various products may have specific instructions regarding drying time, so be sure to read the directions on your particular product. Wipe away any excess with a clean cloth or rag. Allow the varnish to dry completely before using the shoes again.

Tips & Warnings
The laces should be varnished regularly for best maintenance results. If you use the shoes often, varnish at least once per week. If uses are more sporadic, varnish after each use.
