How to Install a Metal or Vinyl Storm Door

To install a metal or vinyl storm door there are a few directions you have to follow. First you want the existing door level and square.

Instructions

1. Make sure existing exterior door is fairly level. There is room for a little adjustment in the frame.

2. Choose what side you want to be hinged or what way you want it to open.

3. Cut hinged jamb side to fit. Cut the bottom off with a hacksaw. Put hinges jamb on desired door side. Drill holes and screw hinges to door.

4. Set door in opening and shim to fit hole. Shim level if possible. Screw to jamb or brickmold. Use matching screws on the exterior.

5. Put the jamb piece on opening side. Cut to fit. Shim so there is an even reveal along door. Screw to jamb or brickmold.

6. Put the top of jamb in place and screw to brickmold.

7. Take out the pattern for the holes for the latch. Bend and stick on the door at desired height. Drill holes, halfway through from each side. Put the thumb plunger parts together with push rod and spring. Put the interior latch in interior put screws through to the exterior handle. screw together.

8. Line up latch plate and screw to jamb.

9. Attach self closure brackets to jamb. Hook self closure to bracket Lock out about 1/2 inch. Hook closure to door bracket. With door closed mark where door bracket will go. Drill holes and screw bracket on.

10. Attach safety chain to top of door if provided. Set this so door will open 90 degrees.
