Convert FLV Files To MP4 on Mac OS X / Snow Leopard

FLV video files are designed to play in a Flash player or Web browser plug-in. MP4s can play in a much wider variety of programs; many portable media devices also support this format. Mac computers do not come with a native application to convert FLVs to MP4s: if you want to view an FLV video using a video application or a device that only plays MP4 files, download a third-party application and use it to convert the FLV on your Mac.

Instructions

EasyWMV

1. Launch your Web browser and navigate to the EasyWMV website. Download the EasyWMV application and install it on your Mac. Launch EasyWMV.

2. Click "Inspector" in the main EasyWMV menu. The "Inspector" window appears.

3. Click the "Format" drop-down menu, then click "MP4."

4. Drag an FLV video file from its folder on your Mac into the EasyWMV application window. EasyWMV automatically converts the FLV into an MP4 file and saves it in the same folder as the source FLV file.

FFmpeg

1. Download the FFmpeg application from FFmpeg.org. Install the program on your Mac and launch FFmpeg.

2. Drag an FLV video file from a folder on your Mac into the "From" section under "Source Format" in the FFmpeg window.

3. Click the "To" drop-down menu under "Target Format," then click "MP4."

4. Click "Save As." A dialog box appears. Click the folder on your Mac in which you want to save the converted MP4 file, then click "Save As."

5. Click "Encode." FFmpeg converts the FLV video to an MP4 file and saves it in the folder you designated.

HandBrake

1. Launch your Web browser and navigate to the HandBrake website. Download and install the HandBrake application on your Mac, then launch the program.

2. Click "Source." A dialog box appears. Navigate to the folder on your Mac containing the FLV that you want to convert. Click the FLV file to select it, then click "Open."

3. Click "Browse," then click the folder on your Mac in which you want to save the converted MP4.

4. Click "Toggle Presets" at the top of the Handbrake window. A list of presets appears on the left side of the window. Click "Universal" under "Apple" if you want to generate an MP4 file for use on Macs, or select "iPod" or iPhone" to make an MP4 tailored for one of these specific devices.

5. Click "Start." Handbrake converts the FLV file to an MP4 and saves it to the folder you designated.
