How to Make Soft Leather Headbands

Performing simple crafting projects can be a productive and fun way to spend time. Especially if you are working with children, crafting projects will keep them occupied and also give them a sense of accomplishment when they see what they have produced. One such project is making headbands; girls can make their own accessories, decorate them as much as they like, and spend a fun afternoon. You can make many of these headbands as well, since they don't take a lot of time or effort. Also, a group of headbands could be the perfect party accessory or gift for a young lady.

Instructions

    • 1

Gather your materials. All of the necessary materials are available at crafting supply stores or convenience stores.

    • 2

Wrap the measuring tape around your head in the same position you would wear a headband. If you are making the headbands for someone else, you will have to estimate their head size. The size of these bands will vary by person.

    • 3

Lay the measuring tape out over your leather. This will give you the circumference of your whole head. Subtract the length of elastic you want to show at the bottom of the headband, where it will wrap under your chin; this is generally between 2 and 4 inches.

    • 4

Cut the strip of leather for your headband to the length you measured. Width can vary depending on your preference for your headband; they can generally be up to 3 inches wide to be worn comfortably.

    • 5

Cut the elastic for your headband. Generally, the elastic will be the length you measured earlier when you measured your head, as this will stretch completely around your head.

    • 6

Sew the elastic into place. Line up the end of the elastic with the end of the leather, so that there is about 1 inch of overlap between the two where you can sew them together. Wrap the leather around the elastic. Stitch them together by hand, or sew them into place with the sewing machine. Repeat for the other side of the elastic and leather, until you have combined the two.

    • 7

Wear the headband with the soft leather in your hair and the elastic under your chin to hold it in place.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are working with children on this project, be sure they know all safety precautions regarding scissors or knives, or be sure you do all of the cutting yourself.
