How to Run 2 Hard Drives As 1

Most computers have just a single hard drive. But for those who want the most out of their computers, RAID is the only way to go. RAID, or "Redundant Array of Independent Disks," is a technology that allows you to use multiple disks in tandem to create a storage platform that is safer or faster than the individual disks alone.

Things You'll Need

• 2 identical hard drives
• Screwdriver

Instructions

1. Buy a PCI-Express-compatible RAID controller. They are sold by a number of online vendors, as well as most local computer parts stores.

2. Turn off your computer, unplug it and open the case. Find an open PCI-Express slot and firmly push the RAID controller into it.

3. Place your hard drives into open drive bays and screw them into place with a screwdriver.

4. Connect your hard drives to the RAID controller and to your computer's power supply.

5. Follow the RAID controller manufacturer's instructions to configure your individual card; configuration instructions vary based on the type of RAID card you purchase. Across the board, however, if you want more safety for your data, choose RAID 1. If you want more speed, choose RAID 0.

6. Reboot your computer. Your operating system should recognize the new RAID array as a single hard drive.
