How to Make a Reflector for an HDTV Antenna Signal

Receiving HDTV signals is a simple as connecting an antenna and pointing it in the direction of the broadcast towers in your areas. However, many times there may be obstructions or simply weak signals that make it difficult to receive. Installing a reflector on your antenna will help to improve signal reception by focusing the signal back to the antenna elements.

Things You'll Need

  • Drill and 1/4-inch drill bit
  • Screwdriver
  • Metal grate (12 x 24)

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the antenna from the TV.

    • 2

Lay the antenna flat on the table with the back side facing up and the elements down. Be careful to not bend any of the elements.

    • 3

Lay the metal grate on the back of the antenna so that the length of the grate runs parallel with the length of the antenna and the grate is centered on the main "mast" of the antenna. Line up one edge with the top end of the antenna.

    • 4

Mark four equally spaced locations on the back of the antenna mast, and drill a 1/4-inch hole through each mark.

    • 5

Mount the grate to the antenna mast using the screwdriver, screws and washers. Tighten each screw to a snug fit.

    • 6

Place the antenna back in its location and reconnect it to the HDTV.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can substitute a metal mesh wire for the grate to make the antenna lighter, but achieve the same results for the reflector.

  • Never install this or any antenna next to or around any electrical power lines as this could result in serious injury or electrocution.
