How to Set Up Software to Work With a Wacom Tablet
Wacom tablets are useful computer interface devices. Moving your finger or a pen-shaped controller over the surface of the pressure-sensitive tablet moves the cursor and enables you to interact with software programs in a manner that feels as natural as drawing on a piece of paper. The Wacom tablet is easily set up by installing the device driver files, which are available on the included CD-ROM or by download from the company's website. After they are installed, the device driver will integrate the Wacom tablet to seamlessly interact with your software programs.

1
Install the device driver software on your computer before you plug in the device. The Wacom tablet ships from the manufacturer with an installation CD. However, if you bought yours secondhand or if you want to be sure you are installing the most up-to-date drivers available, you can download the driver files from the Wacom website (see References).

2
Locate the installation CD-ROM that shipped with your Wacom tablet device. This disc contains an automated software installer. Insert it into the CD drive on your computer. The welcome screen should appear automatically. If the welcome screen does not appear, browse to the icon for your CD drive, double-click it, and run the program named Install.exe.
Click "Install Tablet" from the menu on the welcome screen. If you are running Mac OS X, you will be prompted to enter your password. The installation software will then display an End User License Agreement. Accept the terms of the agreement to proceed with the installation. Follow the prompts to load the device driver files onto your computer system. Click "OK" when the installation process is complete.

Visit the Wacom Device Drivers web page (see References) to download the most recently updated version of the driver file for your device. Select your tablet model from the drop-down menu under the heading "Step 1," and select your computer operating system from the drop-down menu marked "Step 2." The page will present you with a list of available driver files. Click the link for the most recently updated file that is compatible with your system. This opens up a Driver Detail page, which presents you with detailed installation instructions that are specific to your computer system and tablet device. Click the "Download" link at the bottom of the page, save the driver file to your computer and double-click it to begin the installation process. Follow the installation instructions to install the driver file on your computer system.

Plug your Wacom tablet device into your computer using an available USB port. Depending on your model, the tablet is now responsive to your touch or a pen device.

5
Launch your favorite graphic design software program, such as Adobe Photoshop, and select a Brush tool. The tool is now responsive to the amount of pressure you apply to the surface of your tablet, making a thinner stroke with light pressure and a thicker stroke when you press down hard.
