How to Join Wood Paneling With Drywall

When remodeling requires you to join wood paneling and drywall, you have a couple of options from which to choose. You must either scribe the paneling or install wood or vinyl mouldings. Fitting a panel to the wall or another object is labor intensive, which is why many people opt for a moulding to bridge the transition. If you are installing paneling in a living area, wood moulding presents a finer look than vinyl. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Scribing a Corner Panel

    • 1

Draw a plumb line on the wall along the center of a stud.

    • 2

Cut the paneling to the widest distance between the corner and the line.

    • 3

Hold the panel in place against the wall and scribe a line on the panel by running a compass along the corner from the top to the bottom.

    • 4

Cut along the line with a jig saw, leaving the pencil line showing. Use a down-cut blade so that the paneling can be cut with the face up without fraying the edge.

    • 5

Plane the edge up to the pencil line with a block plane and sand it with 100-grit sandpaper. This may take you a couple of tries before it fits well.

    • 6

      Nail on the paneling.

    Installing Vinyl Mouldings

    • 7

Cut the paneling to fit. Leave the panel about 1/8-inch short.

    • 8

Cut a piece of vinyl trim to length and slip it over the paneling for the finished edge. These mouldings are available at the store where you purchased the paneling. Depending on the look you desire, you may want to miter your corners to give it a more finished look.
