How to Use Purple in Packaging
The Institute for Color Research (CCICOLOR) states that "Research reveals people make a subconscious judgment about a person, environment or product within 90 seconds of initial viewing and that between 62% and 90% of that assessment is based on color alone." According to Kathryn Weber, a publisher of the Red Lotus Letter Feng Shui E-zine and a certified authentic feng shui consultant, "Purple is definitely a power color." It is associated with royalty, power and honor. For these reasons, it is important for your business to learn how to use it in packaging.

Children's Packaging
-
1
Wrap children's products in as much of the hue as possible. According to Kathryn Weber, "Some 75 percent of small children choose purple over other colors," due to its association with mystery and magic.
-
2
Choose a darker hue for boys' merchandise packaging and mix it with a darker blue or black to make it appear more masculine. For example, make the box itself a royal purple and display the graphics in black.

-
3
Mix in more feminine colors in girls' merchandise packaging. For example, a lavender-colored box with pink hearts or a royal purple box with yellow flowers.
Adult Packaging
-
4
Mix another royal color, such as red, in the merchandise packaging for more elegant and expensive items. Both are hues associated with passion and power, as well as being well-known attention-grabbers.
-
5
Add orange elements to sale items, or products that you want to seem like they are more affordable. Orange is associated with being playful and cheap. Therefore, adding orange piping around a royal purple, for example, can make a luxurious item appear to be less expensive than it actually is.
-
6
Bring in other tones based on color psychology that convey what the product is actually used for. For example, add a sage green to lavender merchandise that is marketed towards healing, blue for products that are meant to increase productivity, and white for delicate items such as baby nursery products or religious items.
-
7
Use purple in packaging with a lighter hand for men's products. Though a darker purple can grab a buyer's attention if it is used in piping around a box, a lighter hue such as lavender is not really a favorite when it comes to marketing for a man.
