How to Compute a Grade Point Average
Your grade point average, or GPA, is a numeric representation of your academic performance and is based on a four-point scale. For a GPA, four represents an "A" grade, three represents a "B," two represents a "C," one represents a "D" and zero represents a failing grade. Your GPA is needed for a variety of reasons, such as for internships, scholarships, jobs and higher education. Your GPA can be calculated based on the number of credit hours attempted during a set time period and the grades you received.

Determine if your school uses a "Plus and Minus" scale. Some institutions assign a point value of three, for example, for all "B" grades, regardless of if it was an "B-" or an "B+." Other institutions assign different point values based on "-plus" or "-minus" grades, such as "3.33" for an "B+" and "2.67" for a "B-" If you are unsure, contact your school's registrar or department of academic records.

Multiply the numeric value for each grade by the number of credit hours the class was worth. Do this for one class at a time. For example, if you received a "C" in a class that was worth three credit hours, multiply two, the numeric value from the four-point scale, by three, the amount of credit hours. Repeat this step for all of the courses attempted during the term.

Add the values together that were calculated in Step 2. Divide this sum by the total number of credit hours attempted. Round the resulting number to two decimal places, which is standard GPA format. This number is your GPA.
