How to Get a Skunk Smell out of Furniture & Clothes

Save

Skunks are cute little animals, but a lot of foul odor comes from them when they defend themselves. When they get too close to a human or pet, they might spray in defense. To humans, this odor is extremely unpleasant. The spray the skunks release is actually an oil compound. Because oil and water don't mix, water alone will not remove the smell. The odor will need to be broken down and dissolved.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 qt. vinegar or peroxide
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1 tsp. dish-washing soap
  • Large bowl
  • 1 part Clorox
  • 9 parts water
  • Rag
  • Fabric deodorizer
  • Steam cleaner
  • 1 tbsp. laundry detergent
  • 1 cup baking soda

Furniture

  • Attend to the affected areas as soon as possible. The longer you wait, the harder it will become to remove the smell.

  • Mix 1 qt. vinegar or peroxide with 1/4 cup of baking soda and 1 tsp. of dish-washing soap. Mix the ingredients inside a large bowl. If you are looking to deodorize your outdoor furniture, you should mix 1 part Clorox and 9 parts water together. If you do not want to make your own solution, there are several over-the-counter solutions containing odor-neutralizing effects available for both indoor and outdoor furniture.

  • Use a rag to massage the solution into the area of the furniture that has the skunk smell. Spraying the area and blotting it with a rag is also an option.

  • Use a steam cleaner to clean the affected area. If you do not have one, you can hire a professional to do it for you. Steam cleaning works well if your home solutions are not working.

  • Spray your furniture with a fabric deodorizer after you have used the solution or steam cleaner. The deodorizer can help create a fresh scent.
