Wearing the right size shoe or boot is vital for the health and comfort of your feet. However, determining which size is the right one for you can be a tricky process, especially considering the variation in size that occasionally occurs between different brands of footwear. Luckily, there is a general formula you can use to figure out your recommended shoe size, regardless of the footwear type.

- Tape measure
Lay a piece of paper on the ground, and place your bare foot on top of it.
Trace the outline of your foot onto the paper. Be sure to trace the size of your foot as accurately as possible, since this outline will provide the basis for your foot measurements.
Measure the length of the outline in inches to determine the length of your foot. Take the measurements to the nearest 16th of an inch.
Convert any fraction of an inch to decimal form. To do this, divide the numerator of the fraction by the denominator. For example, if you determined that your foot was 10 and 4/16 inches you would divide 4 by 16 to get 0.25. You would then add this 0.25 to the 10 full inches, making the total length of your foot 10.25 inches.
Convert the inches to the actual shoe size. To do this, refer to the conversion chart found in the Resources section of this article.
