How to Clean the Binding on a Jute Rug

Jute, a relative of the hemp plant, is a strong and durable vegetable fiber. Jute makes soft, inexpensive rugs with a rugged tweed appearance. The rugs are ideal for residential and commercial structures. Like other woven rugs, jute rugs must be cleaned and maintained regularly to keep dust and dirt from building up on the fibers. When cleaning the binding on a jute rug, use a cleaning method that will not damage the rug or binding. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

      Take the jute rug outside.

    • 2

Shake the rug four to five times to free any loose dust and dirt from the rug's fibers.

    • 3

Vacuum the jute rug's binding gently with brush attachment of the vacuum cleaner. Do not place the brush attachment too close to the rug's binding or catch the corner of the jute rug---this can damage the rug's binding. Vacuum in the direction the binding is sewn on to keep from destroying the binding.

    • 4

Sprinkle 1 tbsp. of cornstarch on the rug binding, if any stains are present on the binding.

    • 5

Let the cornstarch sit for 30 minutes to absorb the stain.

    • 6

Vacuum the jute rug binding to remove the cornstarch and stain.

    • 7

Apply 1 tbsp. of club soda to a soft cloth or towel. Wring out excess club soda.

    • 8

Blot any heavy stains on the jute rug's binding not removed with the cornstarch method with the club soda-soaked cloth. Blot the spots gently with the cloth until the stains are gone.

    • 9

Re-vacuum the rug's binding and the rug itself.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never steam clean, use a water-saturation cleaning method, bleach, bleach-based cleaner or wet shampoo your jute rug. These cleaning methods will damage the rug.
