How to Learn Anthropology Online

Professional and nontraditional students who are interested in pursuing an academic degree in anthropology are often unable to attend campus-based colleges due to their demanding schedules and geographic limitations. Fortunately, a number of online schools allow students to work and fulfill outside demands while taking courses online. Students interested in taking online anthropology courses can enroll in one of the many programs through which they are offered.

If you haven't yet done so, earn a high school diploma by completing the High School Equivalency Program (HEP), or earning a General Equivalency Diploma (GED). Accredited online college and university programs require a high school diploma before allowing students to enroll in any capacity.

    • 2

For students interested in flexible online anthropology courses, consider established schools that offer asynchronous, or archived, courses. Schools offering online asynchronous anthropology degrees include Northern Arizona University, the University of North Carolina, and Southern New Hampshire University.

    • 3

For students interested in getting an online anthropology degree, consider nationally accredited university programs that offer online degrees, such as the Master of Science in Applied Anthropology online degree offered by the University of North Texas.

    • 4

Select those undergraduate or graduate programs that best fulfill your educational needs, and apply to multiple schools in order to gain reserve options should your primary choice not work out. For postgraduate students, there are no PhD anthropology degree programs available online.

    • 5

Determine the number of credits you can realistically take simultaneously, and enroll in the classes you have selected. Be sure to fulfill all online assignments and exams according to the program's established schedule.

    • 6

For undergraduate anthropology online degrees, complete the necessary applied science thesis paper, which often require the combination of ethnographic research and quantitative methodologies to produce an original conclusion. Gaining the necessary skills in these areas is fully possible through online study and research.

    • 7

For online graduate anthropology students, complete an originally researched practicum, which typically makes up the final two terms of study. The practicum -- a qualitative and/or quantitative research study that either examines current cultural conditions or historical societies -- culminates the graduate anthropology degree.

    • 8

If you have enrolled in a degree program that requires a campus visit upon completion, either to present a practicum or to complete a final exam, coordinate your schedule and set aside financial resources to allow for any necessary travel arrangements.

Tips & Warnings

  • Contact the anthropology department at your chosen school and declare an intention to graduate once you have completed your studies. This step is necessary for many schools before they will release your diploma.

  • Avoid international online schools or dodgy online universities that have no state or national accreditations.
