How to Repair Leather Garments

Leather is an expensive material for very good reasons: It's durable, it wears well, and a good leather product, if well taken care of, will last you the rest of your life. That's why an accidental rip, burn mark or permanent stain in leather is so frustrating. The good news is that you don't have to take your leather garments to a professional leather seamstress, tailor or dry cleaner. Instead, you can solve the problem at home for a fraction of the price.

Instructions

    • 1

Procure a leather patch. You can do this by cutting a small piece from the inside lining of your leather garment. If it's not possible for you to do that, visit a fabric store. They should carry leather swatches or bolts of the material, and you can buy a small piece to make a patch.

    • 2

Cut around the damaged part of the leather and remove it completely. Make sure you cut around it, creating a perfect circle.

    • 3

Place a piece of paper under the circle in the leather, between the lining and the leather. Trace the shape of the circle onto the paper using a pencil. You want to trace the circle as accurately as possible.

    • 4

Cut the circle from the paper. Place it on top of your swatch of leather and cut around the pattern as exactly as possible. You want the leather patch to match the hole perfectly.

    • 5

Cut a piece of linen in a circle, but create a circle that has a diameter that is slightly bigger than your leather patch. Glue the leather patch to the middle of the linen circle.

    • 6

Apply a perimeter of glue to the linen circumference surrounding the leather patch. Place the linen and leather patch beneath the leather hole, touching the lining, with the leather patch fitting the hole perfectly.

    • 7

Place a flat, heavy item or items, such as a stack of books, on top of the patch as it dries.
