How to Become a Boiler Operator

A boiler operator is in charge of the boilers located in large buildings. Boilers regulate the temperature, and boiler operators ensure that they are working safely and properly within certain guidelines. They perform numerous job tasks that include testing boiler water, safety checks, routine maintenance and recording data associated with boilers. Boiler operators work in extreme conditions that involve high temperatures, loud noise, dangerous equipment, hazardous materials and a lot of dust and dirt.       Meet the minimum requirement of having a high school diploma.

      Complete informal on-the-job training or a formal training or apprenticeship program. An apprenticeship normally lasts four years and consists of approximately 8,000 hours of on-the-job training and 600 hours of classroom instruction.

      Many cities and states have licensing requirements that include being at least 18 years of age, residing in the city or state for a specified time period, passing an exam and having a certain amount of experience. Research the specific requirements for a boiler job in the state where you intend to work.
