How to Stop a Doxie From Barking
Dachshunds, sometimes referred to as "wiener dogs" or "Doxies," are charming lively dogs that are social with other pets and dedicated to their owners. However, among all of the positive aspects of dachshunds, they do have a few bad habits as well. Dachshunds are known for their barking tendencies, a little bit more than the typical dog. You can easily stop a Doxie to from barking with the proper preventative training and discipline. Simply identify the reason your Doxie is barking, then break the behavior with consistent commands and positive reinforcement.

1
Identify the reason your Doxie is barking. Of course, dogs have a natural inclination to bark if they are startled or sense danger. However, dachshunds sometimes tend to bark more than necessary to get attention or when they are hyper. This is the type of barking you need to stop.

Fill an empty soda can with a few coins or fill a spray bottle with water. The best way to stop a Doxie from barking is to associate something negative that they don't like with their barking. Your Doxie won't like the noise the can makes or being sprayed by the spray bottle, so the method you use depends on your own personal preference. If you do use a spray bottle, clean the bottle thoroughly and fill it with clean, fresh water.

Say "Quiet," in a sharp, serious voice when your Doxie barks inappropriately. Then, jingle the coins in the can or spray him with the spray bottle. Consistently do this every time the dog barks excessively. However, be careful not to do this when the dog barks naturally, like when someone comes to the door, or he will never bark.

4
Reward your Doxie when he listens to your command and stops barking. Praise him with words, pet him, and even give him a treat. Using this method, your dog will remember the negative reinforcement of barking out of turn, and the positive reinforcement when he stops barking.

Tips & Warnings
Give your dog the chance to bark two to three times before giving the command to determine what is natural barking. While you are training your Doxie to stop barking, try giving him more exercise. Lack of exercise sometimes leads to more barking in dachshunds.
