How to Soak Ford Carburetors

Restoring an old engine or simply making repairs can be quite fun, but challenging at times. A big setback is usually having to purchase a new part when an old one isn't working. Older Ford carburetors can seize up over time with wear and tear, but this usually can be fixed. To get the choke moving again in your Ford carburetor, soak it in carburetor cleaner.

Instructions

    • 1

Unscrew the plate covering the choke valves inside the carburetor. The plate has four screws holding it to the side of the carburetor. Under the plate, expose the four or six choke valves in the carburetor. A choke valve is the size and shape of a quarter with four small holes in it.

    • 2

Spray WD-40 onto each choke valve.

    • 3

Push the flathead screwdriver against each choke valve to get it to loosen or actually move.

    • 4

Set the Ford carburetor into the bucket.

    • 5

Pour carburetor cleaner into the bucket until the carburetor is fully submerged. Soak the carburetor overnight.

    • 6

Remove the carburetor the next day and wipe it clean with rags. Test that the choke valves turn by pushing the flathead screwdriver against each valve.
