How to Make an Urn Water Fountain
Water fountains are often focal points in a yard or garden. You can make an outdoor water fountain from a variety of objects, including planters, buckets, barrels and urns. Garden urn fountains are often more regal and decorative than other types of homemade water fountains. They are also among the easiest to make. Select a garden urn for your water fountain that's at least 20 inches tall with at least a 17-inch diameter. The urn can be made from any type of material and may be fluted or not.

Drill a hole large enough to fit the solar cable that runs from your submersible fountain pump to the solar panel. If you select an electric fountain pump, you'll need an opening large enough to fit the end of the electrical cord. Drill the hole at the base of the urn so it's out of sight. In a fluted urn, drill a hole through the urn's inside base, then you can run the cable underneath the urn. Make sure you use the proper drill bit for the urn material. For example, to drill a hole in a ceramic or concrete urn, use a carbide or diamond drill bit.

Place the submersible solar fountain pump inside the urn. Connect the solar cable to the pump and run it out through the drilled hole to the solar panel. Fill the opening around the cable with plumber's putty. Let it dry before adding water to the urn.

Set up the solar panel according to the manufacturer's instructions in an area of your yard that receives as much sun as possible. It's a good idea to bury the cable from the solar pump or from the electrical pump. You can dig a small trench for either and avoid potential accidents.

Attach the fountain head extension to the fountain pump. Extend the fountain head to just below the urn's rim. If the extension does not reach, you can stack bricks inside the urn to make a platform that will elevate the fountain pump.

Fill the urn with water. When the solar panel has soaked up enough sunshine, your water fountain will begin to flow.
