How to Organize Sewing Thread

If your thread is all over the place, an organizational session is in order. Organizing thread saves you time and energy down the road. The next time you're searching for a specific type or color of thread, you'll know right where to look. Rather than searching through endless spools of thread, you can go to the exact spot for the needed sewing thread. The organizational system you use depends on personal preference and your available resources.

Instructions

    • 1

Sort the sewing thread by type. The types of thread you own will depend on the type of sewing projects you do. Some people have lots of different thread types while others stick with one or two. This thread-sorting method helps you easily locate the correct type of thread for your current sewing project.

    • 2

Sort each type by color, placing similar colors together. The color sort gives you a second level of organization for the thread. It is particularly useful if you have a large number of spools.

    • 3

Choose your method of storage. Feasible thread container options include pegboards, glass jars, plastic craft organizers, a small set of plastic drawers and commercial thread organizers. Consider the space you have available and your preferred method of storing the thread when choosing a storage container.

    • 4

Select a location for the thread organizer. A shelf or closet near the sewing machine works well. If you're using a pegboard, hang it on the wall near the sewing machine.

    • 5

Place the thread in the designated thread storage container, keeping similar types and colors together.

    • 6

Create labels for the containers if you have several. Include both the type of thread and the color range so you can easily locate your desired thread.

    • 7

Test out your thread organization system for a few weeks. Make adjustments to the way the thread is organized as necessary to make it a more efficient system.
