Repairing the mortar as soon as it begins crumbling will prevent dangerous situations where your chimney is susceptible to falling over during a storm when strong winds are present.   • Hammer
  • Stiff wire brush
  • Mortar
  • Bucket

      Hit the cracked area with a hammer and chisel to remove as much of the mortar as possible. Clean out the area of the cracking mortar with a stiff wire brush.

      Mix together your mortar mix with water until it has a thick, but not crumbly consistency.

      Grab a load of mortar on the end of your trowel.

      Press the mortar into the crack using the end of your trowel. Continue packing the crack until you can't fit any more mortar in. Let the mortar stiffen in the crack, then pack in more mortar. Allow the mortar to dry again.

      Scrub the surface of the bricks with the stiff wire brush to remove any mortar from the surface.
