How to Wash Thermal Drape Curtains

Thermal drapes prevent cold air from coming into the home in cold winter months and keep heat from penetrating the curtains in hot summer months. They can save you money on the cost of heat and air conditioning, making them a valuable addition to your home. As with any other curtains, thermal drape curtains need to be cleaned occasionally to remove dust and buildup that collects over time. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Read the curtain label to be sure the thermal drape curtains are machine washable.

    • 2

Remove the drapes from the curtain rod, pulling off all drapery panels.

    • 3

Place the drapes in the washing machine along with a cap of gentle laundry detergent.

    • 4

Turn the washing machine on the delicate wash cycle, using cold water. This will prevent colors from bleeding or fading.

    • 5

Remove the drapes from the washing machine after the cycle is complete and place in the dryer.

    • 6

Turn the dryer on a low heat, tumble-dry setting. Check the drapes every half hour and remove when dry.

    • 7

Place the drapes back on the curtain rods and re-hang.

Tips & Warnings

  • In addition to washing your thermal drape curtains occasionally, you should dust the curtains with a feather duster every week and vacuum once a month for a more thorough cleaning. Use the vacuum's hose attachment to reach between fabric creases and along seams. For spot cleaning, dampen a cloth with warm water and wipe the drapes as needed.

  • For dry-clean-only curtains, dust and vacuum as needed, but take the drapes to a professional dry cleaner when further cleaning is needed.
