How to Run a Basketball Offense: Give and Go

Many agree that this is, quite simply, the best play in basketball. It's rudimentary, easy to learn, and relies primarily on speed.

    Instructions

    Things You'll Need

    • Basketballs
      • 1

Understand that this play can be launched by any player but generally works best from the point guard.

      • 2

Send the guard downcourt, passing quickly to either a wing or a post. This is the "give."

      • 3

Have the guard continue past the wing or post and into the lane, hopefully leaving his defender behind, lost and confused. This is the "go."

      • 4

Instruct the wing or post to pass the ball back to the now-uncovered guard.

      • 5

Have the guard grab the ball and drive for an easy layup or, possibly, a helicopter jam, depending on traffic conditions and wind patterns.

      • 6

Ensure that your now-heroic guard points to his feeder in recognition of the nice assist.

    Tips & Warnings

    • First fake the pass to help jog your defender.

    • Because of its ease, this is a good offense for young players.

    • Watch that the guard doesn't charge anyone in his haste to get open.

    • If you have any condition that would impair or limit your ability to engage in physical activity, please consult a physician before attempting this activity.

This play is best with two good shooters and a screen man. There is less running involved, so players won't wear out easily and it gives the shooters a chance for a wide open shot or the screen man an easy lay up.
