How to Cut Geometric Wood Shapes

Woodworking is a craft that utilizes a wide array of tools, from simple carving knives to complicated mechanical saws. Using wood as a medium, a craftsman can create hundreds of unique objects and designs, including geometric shapes. Designing geometric shapes utilizes basic geometry skills and tools such as a ruler or a square. Geometric wooden shapes, such as squares, rectangles, triangles or trapezoids to name a few, can be fun to design for your children for use in puzzles or games. You can safely and quickly fashion simple geometric shapes from wood following a set of simple guidelines.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a carpenter's square or stencils to draw geometric shapes onto the surface of the wood. Place the square flat onto the wood and use a pencil to trace the edges. Stencils are great for perfect circles or ovals, while a carpenters square can provide a straight edge for creating angles, and straight lines for triangles, squares and rectangles.

    • 2

Place the wood onto the platform of a vertical band-saw. Put on safety glasses and gloves, then turn the saw on.

    • 3

Push the piece of wood towards the saw blade with the stenciled lines aiming at the blade. Run the wood through the saw smoothly staying on the lines. Repeat with the remaining sides of the shape you are creating.

    • 4

Sand the shape down to remove any hard splintered edges with fine grade sandpaper. If you're making blocks, or puzzle shapes for children, ensure that you sand it down thoroughly to avoid the child getting splinters.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use extreme caution when working with a vertical band-saw. Keep fingers as far away from the blade as you can.

  • Always wear adequate eye protection when working with wood and mechanical saws.
