Instructions

  1. The Victory Roll

    • 1

Separate one small section of hair behind your ear.

    • 2

Smooth the section of hair with your boar bristle brush.

    • 3

Roll the hair toward your head. Do not twist your hair as you do this. The end result should look smooth and round.

    • 4

Tuck any stray hairs that have escaped back into the roll.

    • 5

Secure the roll with bobby pins.

    • 6

Repeat steps 2 through 5 on a segment of hair on the other side of your head. Try to keep the roll as even and as smooth as possible.

    • 7

Separate out the segment of hair that runs above your forehead and pull it straight out in front of you.

    • 8

Smooth this section out with your boar bristle brush.

    • 9

Roll it back toward your head. This roll will be larger than the rolls that you placed behind your ears.

    • 10

Smooth this larger roll into shape with your boar bristle brush to catch any stray hairs and bring them back into place.

    • 11

Secure the roll with bobby pins.

    • 12

Spray your hair with hairspray to set your victory rolls.

    • 13

Brush out the back of your hair with your boar bristle brush.

    • 14

Curl the hair at the back of your head down and under loosely, or flip it out. Either way, these curls should be large.

    • 15

Spray your hair with hairspray to fix it.

    The Chignon

    • 16

Part your hair with a comb. Center parts had fallen out of style in the 1940s, and side parts were very fashionable. You can lengthen a round face with a side part.

    • 17

Gather your hair into a low ponytail and secure it with a hair elastic. Make sure that your hair is smooth on the top and along the sides.

    • 18

Pull your ponytail into three or four sections.

    • 19

Wrap each section around your fingers several times and spritz with hair spray. You should now have several long, loose curls.

    • 20

Lift the bottom of your ponytail and wrap the length around the base of your ponytail. This should hide the hair elastic completely.

    • 21

Pin the length of your hair down securely, using the hair elastic as a base. You can choose a loose look with escaping tendrils, or a wrap that is more tidy and severe.

    • 22

Arrange the hair so that the hair elastic is completely hidden.

    • 23

Spray your hair with hairspray to fix it.

Tips & Warnings

  • Instead of creating curls for your victory roll, you might want to buy or make hair rats, foam tubes around which you can wind your hair.

  • Experiment with the size and the number of the victory rolls that you choose to make. Some women prefer to use the boar bristle brush to make it look like one large sweep of hair is rising from the face, while others prefer three separate rolls or curls.

  • Both the victory roll and the chignon will be easier to accomplish if your hair has not been washed in the past 24 hours. The natural oils will make your hair easier to arrange.

  • Rolling your hair into a victory roll takes time, patience and practice, so do not be surprised if you do not get the hang of it right away.

  • The longer your hair is, the more difficult these styles will be to arrange.
