Instructions for Programming a Toyota Sequoia Chip Key

To make a spare key for a Toyota Sequoia, you must program it. You can go to your local Toyota dealer, but it may charge around $50 for the job. You can get instructions out of your owner's manual to do it yourself for free. However, if you've misplaced your manual, they're not available for free. Complicating the issue is that the programming procedure differs by model year.

Instructions

  1. Models from 1998 through 2002

    • 1

Buy a blank key. Online auction sites have them for around $20.

    • 2

Get a locksmith or hardware store to copy the master key's cut into the blank. The master key is usually the black one.

    • 3

Get in your Sequoia. Close all the doors.

    • 4

Press and release the accelerator and brake pedals simultaneously. Within five seconds, insert a pre-programmed key into the ignition (it can be either the primary/master or a valet key). Turn the ignition to the ON position. In less than 15 seconds, press and release the accelerator pedal (but not the brake) five times. Press it only four if you inserted the valet key instead of the primary key.

    • 5

Depress and release the brake pedal (but not the accelerator) six times for a primary key---five times for a valet key. Complete this step within 20 seconds of completing Step 4.

    • 6

Switch the ignition to OFF and take out the key.

    • 7

Put in the unprogrammed key and turn the ignition to ON within 10 seconds of taking out the programmed key.

    • 8

Step on the accelerator and release it within 10 seconds of turning the ignition cylinder. You should see the security light flashing for 60 seconds. When the flashing stops, the programming is complete.

    Models after 2002

    • 13

Turn the ignition from the ON position to the OFF position five times.

    • 14
