How to Crochet a Lanyard
A lanyard is a useful way to hold keys, cellphones or other small items you need but do not want to carry. When you attach these items to a lanyard and place it around your neck, suddenly you have your hands free to do other things while still carrying these important items. A lanyard can be made easily by crocheting it with a small amount of worsted weight yarn. Basic crochet skills are necessary to complete this project.
Things You'll Need
- Tape measure
- Worsted weight yarn (any color)
- Crochet hook (size H)
- Key ring
- Large yarn needle
Instructions
-
-
1
Determine the length of the lanyard by placing the tape measure around your neck and measuring the desired lanyard length.
-
2
Chain a base chain that is equal to the length you measured.
-
-
3
Slide the key ring onto the chain in the center of the base chain and leave it on the chain while you finish crocheting the lanyard.
-
4
Join the chain on your crochet hook with the first chain you made by slip stitching through the first chain. This will create a circular shape with the key ring enclosed in the lanyard.
-
5
Chain two and then stitch a half-double crochet in every chain around the circular shape. Make a slipstitch in the top of the first two chains you made.
-
6
Crochet a slip stitch in every half-double crochet around the circular shape to finish crocheting the lanyard.
-
7
Cut the yarn to a 3-inch tail and tie a tight knot to finish. Trim the yarn close to the knot.
-
8
Hold the lanyard so the key ring is at the bottom, extending down from the lanyard. Fold the two lengths of lanyard over each other above the dangling key ring. Thread the needle with an 8-inch length of matching yard. Stitch a horizontal line 1-inch up from the key ring to keep the key ring from moving along the lanyard. Knot the yarn and cut off the excess yarn.

9
Insert keys onto the key ring and place the lanyard around your neck.
