How to Raise Baby Fish in an Aquarium
People skilled in fish keeping may want to learn how to raise their own fish successfully. Fry (baby fish) rearing is challenging. They can develop within a few minutes or over a period of several weeks. You must raise these baby fish in a separate rearing tank away from adult fish that will eat them. You must also create a proper rearing environment.
Things You'll Need
- Separate rearing aquarium
- Protected water heater
- Slow-moving filter
- Aquatic live or plastic plants
- Liquid fry food or infusoria
- Brine shrimp

1
Prepare a fry rearing tank separate from the main aquarium. Install a water heater that is covered or protected so that the fry do not get burned. Use an under gravel filter or a weak sponge filter to prevent the fry from getting stuck in the filter. Set the temperature and pH level in the rearing tank to an acceptable level for the particular fish species.
-
2
Add many plants and ornaments to the rearing tank for the young fry to hide in.
-
-
3
Change 25 to 50 percent of the tank water everyday to remove toxins and keep the fry healthy.
-
4
Feed the fry liquid fry food or infusoria (a microscopic animal) two to four times a day once the fry's yolk sacks have disappeared.
-
5
Begin feeding larger fry brine shrimp.
-
6
Introduce the fry to the main tank once they are too big for other fish to eat.

Tips & Warnings
Add dechlorinator to tap water when filling or changing the water in the rearing tank.
Introduce beneficial bacteria to the rearing tank. This bacteria will remove waste from the aquarium water and maintain the health of the fish. Prior to placing the fish in the tank, place the filter mesh from the main aquarium in the filter of the rearing tank to introduce beneficial bacteria. You can also put substrate and ornaments from the main tank into the rearing tank.
