How to Create an AVI With Nero

Nero software can do several things with video files including editing, burning and converting. All of the regular movie formats are available to convert to, including AVI. Following a few simple steps, you can create an AVI from a video, multiple videos or even a collection of photos. Once the conversion is completed, you can burn a CD or DVD or share the file online with family and friends.

Instructions

    • 1

Open up the Nero Vision application from your Start menu. If you use Nero Start Smart to access Nero applications, then click on the "Edit Movie" icon located in the "Photo/Video" section of Nero Start Smart.

    • 2

Start a new project by clicking on "Make Movie" at the Nero Vision start screen. A new project will load featuring a "Preview Monitor," a "Files and Effects" window and a "Timeline" window.

    • 3

Import your media by clicking on the Folder link and selecting "Browse and Import." Choose audio, video or the picture files that you want to turn into an AVI. Wait a minute for Nero to process all of the files.

    • 4

Click and drag the files into the timeline window. This is a basic editing program where you can order, trim and edit each of the files. Click on the "Expanded Timeline" window link to do more advanced functions like adding extra audio files.

    • 5

Click on the "Effects" tab in the right corner when all of the video clips are in the order. The different effects can change the way the video looks by adding fake snow, fire, turning a color clip to gray-scale or several others. Drag and drop an effect over a clip to apply it.

    • 6

Add titles to the project by clicking on the large "A" icon. Choose a title animation type and drag it down to the clip. A small box pops up on the screen where you can type the title.

    • 7

Test the effects and titles by pressing "Play" in the preview window. There may be a short delay to render the effects, but they all will play in real time to show what the final output will look like. Preview the video completely to make sure the pictures, audio and graphics all flow together and there are no errors.

    • 8

Click on the "Export" tab at the bottom of the screen when the project is complete. A new window will load with video options. Click on the drop-down menu in the top left corner and select "AVI" at the bottom of the list.

    • 9

Select a save point by pressing "Browse" and then press the "Export" icon again to start the process. A video could take anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour to render, depending on how long and how many effects. Read the Nero estimate to see how long until the project completes.
