How to Use the Apple Care CD

AppleCare is an extended service and support plan from Apple. AppleCare helps users troubleshoot Apple hardware and software. Applecare provides additional protection in the event of a technical issue outside of Apple's standard one-year limited warranty, extending the warranty to three years from the date of purchase. Those who choose to purchase the additional AppleCare coverage receive an AppleCare CD. This CD contains a diagnostic utility called TechTool Deluxe that allows users to test a computer's critical system components.

Instructions

    • 1

      Insert the AppleCare CD.

    • 2

Hold the "C" key while clicking "Restart" on the Apple menu. Once the Apple logo appears, release the "C" key.

    • 3

Select what language to use. Click the "OK" button.

    • 4

Use the "Volume" drop-down menu to select a volume to run diagnostics on.

    • 5

Check the boxes for the tests you wish to run. For example, if you want to run diagnostics on your RAM, select the RAM box.

    • 6

Click the "Start" button. You can view the progress of TechTool Deluxe near the top of the screen. If you wish to bypass a test, click the "Skip" button. If you wish to stop testing altogether, click "Stop."

    • 7

View test results once the tests are complete. The software will automatically generate a report that provides a description for each test as well as which tests were passed, failed and skipped. If a test fails, the report will detail how to correct the problem.

    • 8

Click the "Done" button. Quit TechTool Deluxe. Your computer will automatically restart.

Tips & Warnings

  • According to the TechTool Deluxe manual, if the volume structure fails a diagnostics test, you should consider backing up your essential data before running repairs.
