How to Make an Italian Renaissance Dress
Italian fashion of the Renaissance era was very elaborate, intricate and expensive-looking. Just because the look was rich does not mean your homemade Italian dress needs to be. The majority of the pieces needed to craft the dress can be found in your own closet or through a few minor purchases at a local vintage or fabric store. They key to authenticity will be in the small details and embellishments.

Creating an Italian Renaissance Costume
-
1
Find either a long, ankle-length skirt or dress. If it is a skirt, then pair it with a matching, long, flowing sleeved shirt that tucks into the skirt. The neckline, whether it be on a dress or blouse, should be modest.
-
2
Cut a strip into the bottom side of each sleeve in the dress or blouse from the wrist to armpit, so the sleeves fall open. Sew a piece of fabric between the two sides to give the sleeves a draping effect. Choose the width of the fabric depending on how long you want the sleeve to fall.

3
Tie a large, lacy or frilly apron around your waist. If an apron is not available, a shawl or a long, flowing piece of fabric will work as well. Ensure whatever piece is chosen, the fabric is elaborate. Lace or ruffles will be ideal.
-
4
Add embellishment by sewing a strip of lace around the wrist of the sleeves, so the lace falls over your hand. Corsets were a popular trend of the time period. If desired, create your own by cutting a slit down the center of the dress from the middle of the neckline to mid-bust. Add small holes going down on either side of the slit. Thread one long ribbon through, leaving the two loose ends at the top. Tie securely.

5
Wrap a shawl around your shoulders, and secure by tying at the neck. If desired, secure with a pin or broach at the top of the bust. Add some simple flat or low-heeled shoes, and tie some red white and green ribbons in your hair.

Tips & Warnings
Don't be afraid to use bright colors as well as to combine different colors. Carry a basket, and tie a scarf around your hair for added detail.
